Salary Range: $230,000 – $295,000

A nationally recognized boutique law firm is seeking a talented mid-level associate (3rd–6th year) to join its market-leading Exempt Organizations practice based in Washington, D.C. This is a unique opportunity for attorneys passionate about nonprofit law, public policy, and strategic advising to work with some of the most prominent charities, foundations, and advocacy organizations in the country.

Key Responsibilities

  • Counsel tax-exempt clients on compliance with IRS regulations and public charity/private foundation rules

  • Draft, review, and submit exemption applications, private letter ruling requests, and other IRS filings

  • Advise on governance, board policies, grantmaking (domestic and international), and fundraising practices

  • Represent clients in IRS audits, appeals, and other administrative proceedings

  • Provide training and strategic counsel to clients navigating complex nonprofit operational matters

  • Work directly with mission-driven clients including public charities, private foundations, advocacy groups, political organizations, and NGOs

Candidate Requirements

  • 3–6 years of legal experience focused on tax-exempt organizations, nonprofit governance, or related regulatory compliance

  • Experience with IRS rules for Section 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and other exempt organizations

  • Prior work at the IRS (TEGE or EEE), nonprofit in-house counsel, or private practice with an EO focus is highly valued

  • Excellent writing, research, and client-service skills

  • Strong academic credentials from a nationally recognized law school

  • Admission to practice in D.C. (or ability to waive in)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $230,000 – $295,000, based on experience
